Who Made Mariner Outboard Motors

Mariner outboard motors were created by Mercury Marine, a division of Brunswick Corporation.

Launched in Australia in 1974, Mariner expanded to the USA and Europe in 1976. In its early years, Mariner outboards were manufactured under a joint‑venture partnership with Yamaha. The first‑generation units were built by Yamaha’s Sanshin Industries and badged as Mariner for global markets. Later, regulatory rulings ended this cooperation. Starting from the early 1980s, Mercury Marine took full‑house production. After that, Mariner shared nearly identical mechanical components with Mercury outboards, with only cosmetic differences in cowlings and decals.

Mariner built a solid reputation for reliable, cost‑effective marine power for fishing boats, dinghies and small recreational vessels across global markets. Its legacy of durable outboard engineering has inspired many marine engine manufacturers around the world.
